Termini alta and bassa walking tour

Ready for an unforgettable adventure in Termini Imerese? Join us on a walking tour where we'll dive deep into the heart and soul of this charming Sicilian town. We'll explore both famous landmarks and hidden gems that only locals know about, uncovering stories, traditions, and legends along the way.

Termini Imerese is a unique town, stretching from the sea to the hills, and all of it is easily explored on foot. Our journey will begin from the upper part of the town and slowly descend, allowing us to discover both sides of Termini as we walk through centuries of history.

We start in the iconic Piazza Duomo, where we'll visit the Chiesa Madre, the heart of the town. Just steps away, you'll enter the Palazzo Comunale, home to breathtaking panoramic views of the city and the stunning Cammara Picta, a room adorned with 17th-century frescoes depicting the town's glorious history, from Roman times onward. In the same piazza, we'll see the statue of General La Masa, one of the town’s most illustrious figures.

From here, we'll stroll through the Villa Comunale, the green heart of Termini, before heading to the Monastery of Santa Chiara and Piano Barlaci, built partially on the remains of one of Sicily's largest Roman amphitheaters. You’ll witness these ancient ruins up close, dating back over 2,000 years.

Next, we’ll stop by Porta Palermo, the remains of the 16th-century town walls, home to a chapel with one of the three Immacolata statues revered by Termini people for centuries. As we head back towards the center, we’ll walk down the historic Via Roma, where you'll enjoy spectacular views of Monte San Calogero. Along the way, you'll see the Torre dei Saccari, a remnant of the Arab defensive walls from the 9th century, and get a glimpse of the Collegio dei Gesuiti.

The tour continues as we descend into the historic Rocchicelle district, one of the town’s oldest areas, where the sea once reached centuries ago. Here, you can still see the holes where boats were moored. We'll visit the Chiesa dell'Annunziata, known for its striking blue-tiled dome, a symbol of Termini. A few steps away, we’ll find the remains of the Chiesa di San Giacomo, a 13th-century church with a Templar cross etched into its stone.

As we make our way through picturesque streets and stairways, we’ll arrive at Piazza Bagni, home to the Grand Hotel delle Terme and ancient Roman thermal springs. You’ll hear legends and stories that span millennia and explore the fascinating history of the early 1900s.

The final leg of our journey will take us to the Chiesa della Consolazione, a former pilgrimage site from the 17th century. We’ll walk along Corso Umberto e Margherita, the main street of lower Termini, passing the Collegio di Maria and the historic Circolo Stesicoro, a 19th-century intellectual club.

We'll conclude our tour on Via Verdura, the site of the famous local market, where we’ll enjoy a well-deserved break to savor pane e panelle, a classic Sicilian street food.
